Uber is launching a recruitment drive to expand its global engineering centre in Vilnius. The Software and Development Engineering Centre, which opened in October 2014 and is one of only ten such centres around the world, supports the digital technology that powers the Uber app used in the 70 countries and 400 cities around the world.

In little over a year, Uber’s engineering centre in Vilnius has grown to a team of almost 20 highly skilled engineers – a team which Uber aims to double by the end of 2016. To help spread the news, Uber has launched an online social media advertising campaign, a recruitment microsite as well as a set of masterclasses at this year’s LOGIN Startup Fair, where Uber will share learnings from its experience as a global digital service provider and where potential candidates will be given the chance to meet with local engineers.

“Our engineering centre in Vilnius is of strategic importance to Uber and we want to expand our investment in Lithuania, continuing to source the best talent from Europe’s secret tech powerhouse – Lithuania – as well as the wider region. Lithuania has some of the most talented engineers in the world and I can’t wait to recruit more of such high calibre engineers,” said Thuan Pham, Uber’s Chief Technology Officer.

Rūta Pentiokinaitė, Acting Managing Director at Enterprise Lithuania, says Uber’s presence in Vilnius is of tremendous importance to the local community:

“Uber is a startup rockstar comparable to companies like Google and Facebook, and so choosing Vilnius for its technology centre is another proof of our top notch talent pool. Uber as a service for drivers boosts entrepreneurship among Lithuanians and provides great flexible economic opportunities for local people. We are excited to have Uber join this year’s LOGIN Startup Fair – the main startup event of the year in the Baltics – where they will be able to share lots of great knowledge and case studies that aspiring minds will most definitely benefit from.”

Enn Metsar, Uber Baltics General Manager said, “Lithuania is one of the most forward-thinking countries in Europe and we’re excited to continue our investment not only in the country but also in the Lithuanian people.”

Uber is a technology platform that connects riders and drivers in real time via a smartphone app, offering a convenient and safe ride – all at the touch of a button. In addition to the engineering hub, Uber has been operating its uberX ridesharing pilot in Vilnius since November 2015 prior to which the City of Vilnius signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Uber in support of ridesharing and to set out to an imminent launch of Uber’s services in Lithuania’s capital.
